Blogging 101

We discussed the purposes of a blog with Mrs Mills. She showed us a video and we had to create the word blog with our fingers. It was a visual spatial activity.

To see what we learnt watch our movie below.

Mandarin Lessons

With two terms of Mandarin language learning behind us we are enjoying finding out about Chinese culture too.

Recently our Mandarin teacher introduced us to Tangrams, check out the link below for some background and activities about Tangrams.  We can now name classroom items in Mandarin.

Enjoy our movie with some of this term's highlights in it...

Disco Fever

On Wednesday 22 June the Ivan Atkin Hall was transformed into a "Weird and Wacky" disco experience DJed by the extremely wacky Mr P, complete with full leg splint.

He and Whaea Ngaere created an awesome night for us to dance, scream with our friends, eat junk food after dinner.... basically have lots of fun!

Dark, atmospheric lighting means some of the photos are a bit grainy or poor quality! Sorry!

BOY POWER!

GIRLS HAVE FUN

Students as Experts

At the end of last term Mrs Hanley and Mrs Hunter set us a challenge for homework.  We were to create ‘expert’ presentations to share with the class. They had to make use of ICT tools, would have us sharing something we enjoyed or knew a bit about.  We are still sharing our presentations but have already enjoyed learning about longboarding, spin bowling, Rugby World Cup history, chocolate making, tennis and lots of other things.

Below are a couple of films that were shared as part of this challenge.  Lachie had us laughing with his cool animations. Geena got us speaking a bit of Spanish and completing a crossword to show we understood some of the words she shared.  Daniel blew us away with his movie about the game ‘Spore’ of which he is an expert.... Enjoy!

Miki! A visitor from Japan!
Room 17 were lucky enough to have Miki from Japan in our class. She was left with memories of yummy Jaffas and pineapple lumps. Unfortunately we didn’t get a photo of her nibbling away at them. Thank you to Ashley's dad for bringing us this opportunity.

Maths Week 10 with Mrs Hanley!
Last week in Maths on Thursday and Friday, we were learning about frequency and cumulative frequency.
We interviewed a few people in our  class of what they think of maths.

Mount Camp

On the 17th and 18th of March rooms 17 and 18 (yes the dates match our room numbers!) headed out of school for some time in the great outdoors getting to know each other better.  We were lucky to have some great parents helping us out with transport, supervision, cooking.... and putting our tents up!

On Thursday we walked the Papamoa Hills Regional Park guided by Mr Fraser, a park ranger from the BOP Regional Council.  We learnt lots of interesting things about the area like Mayor Island obsidian was traded for other goods, bracken fern was eaten when kumara crops failed and thousands of people lived on the pa site during times of war.

Hamburgers for dinner and a swim at the hot pools (with the NZ Sevens team, woo hoo!) made up for all the walking we did.

Some of us did lots of talking during the night, hmm tent walls are not so good at keeping noise in - but at least we were actively working on the 'getting to know each other' Learning Intention.

Mr Arthur took us for a beach run at 7 o'clock on Friday morning, argh!

We discovered a huge variety of marine life in the rock pools at the base of the Mount.... sea anemones are soft even though they look a bit like concrete.

Room 17... that's us.... rocked the tug of war.  We completely took out room 18!  Then our two classes showed the parents that we are no push over either.

YUM! Thanks to Mrs Hunter we had a delicious lunch at Pilot Bay.... of the kiwi favourite... Fish and Chips.  Thanks to the Mount Fish and Chip shop who gave us some L and P for freeeeee!

Back to school.

"And now," cried Max,"let the wild rumpus start..."

Each week you can look forward to a new blogging team who will post up-to-the-minute details on what's happening in Room 17.  This is a way for students to have their own 'voice' and presence online, please pass the link on to family and friends... we look forward to gathering lots of followers and reading your comments!
